Life in the city

Last week during one of our breaks from reality Eros and I checked into the very lovely Doubletree Hotel in downtown Detroit. I have to say that I was very pleased with the location. The Doubletree is one of the newer hotels so I was not worried about the rooms but still I have to say that I has very happy with the selection. I should have taken pictures to post on the blog. Oh well, I’ll have to remember that for next time. Being that Eros and I are both from Detroit, we thought we’d use this reality break to explore the city. You know when you live in a certain area, you never really experience all that it has to offer. I suppose you get caught up with the everyday concerns of life and you just never get around to doing certain things.

Anyway, the hotel had a really cool bar which is where we spent the first night. The bar was not too crowded, but there were just enough people to provide a nice atmosphere. After a few drinks we headed over to Flood’s. To my surprise Flood’s was jam packed…did I mention this was a Wednesday night? There were people everywhere. Eros and I had another drink and then we headed to the dance floor. Ok, I can’t really dance, but I love being on the dance floor. This is especially true when the dance floor is packed…gives me a reason to be cuddled up with Eros. So we danced and danced and danced until Eros insisted that it was time to go. So we left.

Thursday, I spent the better part of the morning sitting in the car. Eros had a job interview and both of us thinking that it would onlylast about 30 minutes, thought it would be a good idea for me to come along. Bad, bad, bad idea! I was in that freaking car for 2 hours. Once the interview was finally over, we headed back downtown to begin our site seeing. Given that the interview took so long we were off to a slow start.

Our first stop was the Charles Wright African American Museum. I had been there before but it was still fun to go with Eros. Our next stop was the Detroit Historical Museum…it was closed! Bummer. That’s what happens when you get a late start…you miss some cool things. As it turns out , missing the second museum was not so bad cuz I was tired.

Eros decided to pick the next stop. He warned me that he had selected an oldie but goodie. He was right. We went to Belle Isle. Belle Isle is an island that sits between Michigan and Canada, of course much closer to Michigan.

Because my mother’s way of planning trip details has started to rub off on me, I had already surfed the web to find a suitable dinner location. The requirements were that it had to be close to downtown, cool in terms of the vibe, and priced right. Based on my research we ended up at a spot called Traffic Jam and Snug. It was only okay. The food was not bad and the price was right…but the vibe was wrong. The place was way to big. Large establishments don’t really provide a funky cool vibe.

Friday we went to the Detroit Breakfast House, breakfast for two came to damn near $50. Note to self…don’t go back there. The service was poor and there ain’t a pancake on Earth that’s worth that much. Eros and I joked that we should have found a Denny’s!

In all we had a great time. Where do you live and are you taking advantage of what your city has to offer?
