Dumpster Diving

The 2nd Annual Labor Day weekend at Tiffany’s has come to a close. In all there were 19 people in my house for the weekend. I know what you’re thinking…19 people. Yup! There were 19 of us and we all survived without anyone getting killed or cursed out. We ate, drank, played games, and then we ate again.

It’s all the eating that goes on when we get together that is the reason for the title of this post. Last year, when I had everyone here I was totally ill prepared for the amount of thrash that would be produced. There were tons of trash bags in my garage following last year’s weekend. I didn’t really think this would be a problem. I mean really, the trash was in the bags…the bags were tied…so no big deal. Right? Wrong!

Labor Day 2008 is now termed the year of the flies. With all the trash bags that were left after our food fest, I was overwhelmed with maggots. That’s right…maggots…those little white squiggly things that turn to flies. It was absolutely awful. They were everywhere. I sprayed them with water…bleach…ammonia…bleach & ammonia (I know…bad combination). Anyway, I finally killed them all. Or so I thought. I swear for the two weeks following last year’s family weekend, I was welcomed home by a new fly each day.

Fast forward to this year…I was determined to not have a repeat of the fly takeover. I staked out several trash dumpsters in preparation for the big weekend. I know…I know…you’re not supposed to dump your trash is someone else’s bin. But you’re also not supposed to be taken over by flies. Without incriminating myself, my cousin Chris, or my aunt Carolyn, let’s just say there will be no maggots this year. Yeah for unlocked trash bins!!

This was funny. I remember when I moved into my house from my apartment. It took me at least a month to go through & unpack everything. I created so much trash while I was getting settled and trash pickup in my new neighborhood was just twice a week. I used to load up the trunk of my car with trash bags and sneak over to my old apartment complex at night to dump the trash. I never got caught but felt that adrenaline rush as if I might ! I have actually done the same thing a couple of times since then when I had big parties at my house.
