Have you heard of the concept of personal branding? I have spent hours upon hours trying to determine (1) if personal branding is a real concept that I should consider and (2) if it is important; what is my personal brand? Do I want to brand myself as an engineer, project manager, product manager, or something else?
I often wonder why I got out of engineering to begin with. At the time I made this decision I was headed to graduate school at DePaul University to obtain my MBA and it just seemed to make sense. But now all I want to do is do my part and call it a day. However, my day is filled solving other people’s problems. It’s exhausting!
Anyway back to the question, is it important to create a personal brand? To some degree, I think the answer is yes. I think it is especially important if changing careers or companies. You have to have a few things about yourself that you are selling. It is these things that I believe form a personal brand.
What do you think?

I don’t. In fact, I would prefer to not fit into any one category of person, believing that we should all recognize how dynamic we are. Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t fit the mold of a Pan-Afrikanist or father or whatever else, but I perform these identities in my own way.
I don’t want to walk around with a “Sociologist” brand on my chest. I’m not always operating in that frame of thought.
